Hi, I’m Jason, a senior software engineer focused primarily on backend systems, APIs, distributed architecture, and pragmatic engineering leadership.
This page is a snapshot of what I’m currently focused on professionally and personally.
Inspired by the idea of a “now page” from nownownow.com.
Current Focus
Right now I’m spending a lot of time sharpening and modernizing parts of my engineering skill set while exploring new opportunities.
A few areas I’m actively working on:
- Go backend development
- Event-driven architecture and distributed systems
- AI/LLM integration patterns
- Cloud architecture and AWS
- Modern TypeScript and React
- System design and technical leadership communication
I’ve spent much of my career in Java and Spring Boot ecosystems, but I enjoy learning new languages and approaches when they solve problems more cleanly.
Things I’m Building
Personal health tracking platform
I’m building a personal vitals tracking application with:
- a Spring Boot backend
- Angular frontend
- JWT authentication
- support for blood pressure and pulse tracking
- plans for medication/activity tracking
I’m also experimenting with a Go-based terminal UI client for interacting with the system.
A Personal Blog and Portfolio Site
This site, right here. It’s built on GitHub Pages using Hugo, and the PaperMod theme. I plan to share my current projects and things I’ve been thinking about lately.
A Simple Envelopes Budgeting System
My wife and I need something to track our spending and saving. I don’t like anything that I’ve used. So, I’ll build something.
Topics I’m Thinking About
Lately I’ve been interested in:
- how senior engineers can continue to grow technically
- how I can use AI tools to improve my workflows
- maintaining curiosity after many years in the industry
Career
I’m currently exploring senior and technical lead engineering opportunities, especially roles involving:
- backend systems
- platform engineering
- cloud infrastructure
- distributed systems
- developer tooling
- Go, Java, or TypeScript ecosystems
I’m particularly drawn to teams that value:
- thoughtful engineering
- strong communication
- ownership
- mentorship
- continuous learning
Outside of Engineering
Outside of software, I enjoy:
- playing bass guitar
- drawing with graphite and charcoal
- reading science fiction and fantasy
- building things from wood with my hands
- learning continuously
- organizing systems and workflows
- exploring better ways to think and work
Philosophy
I like building software that is:
- understandable
- maintainable
- useful
- resilient
- beautiful
I’m less interested in hype and more interested in practical engineering that helps real people solve real problems.
You can find my projects and writing throughout this site as I continue documenting what I’m learning and building.
